September 1st

Wow, how did it get to be the first day of September??!!
We have been blessed by Mother Nature the last few days. She has given us gorgeous weather here in New Hampshire. Is she trying to make up for sending IRENE for a visit? (who was not a welcome guest)

I was in the shop today (Just The Thing! Dover NH) and met a lovely young lady who took the drive over because she reads this Blog and wanted to check out the store. HI MICHELLE!
I love it when I get to meet some one who *knows* me from my Blog or my  L Kells Antiques FaceBook page.

A few things went out of the shop this week. This chunky country cabinet and the sweet vintage telephone stand went to new homes. Thanks!

Before/After

Boring little vintage telephone table

I don't know about you but the transformation of even a basic small furniture piece with a coat of paint still amazes me. I love quick re-dos like this. That's why I keep my paint brush and sponge in a belt holster around my waist  at all times! (ok not really)

Auction Finds

I got a few sweet old items and small pieces of furniture (to repaint) at the auction the other day.
Aren't these old cat prints adorable.

I keep my dogs' toys in old baskets so soon as I put this down Tzu Tzu was looking to see if there were toys in it.

Nice mirror. This old heavy ornate frame will be painted creamy white. (of course)

This is a decent old wooden chest. The person who made &/or built it has his name and the date, 1915, written inside.  From Hamilton Mass.

Vintage RansBurg canister set, bread box and match box holder.

Where does the time go?

Where do the days go?
I did get to a good auction the other day. Love the big all day ones under the tents. And love the walk around at the end of the day to get the awesome table and box lot deals!
Here's some pics of a few *pretties* from that recent auction.

Shop Space JUST THE THING! Dover NH

movin'

I haven't been posting here as often as I should be. Seems I am doing more on my FaceBook page.
(tsk tsk)
Plus we moved! It was totally unplanned, disorganized, rushed and stressful but it's been fun too. Long story but we have been living in an addition we had built onto our main house 6 years ago. It was a nice small but open space, had a good shabby country cottage style but there was one big drawback, NO KITCHEN! There was of course a kitchen (my former kitchen) a few steps away in the main house, and it was planned to be shared...but that didn't really work out.
So now I am back in the house we had built in 88. Phew. And to confuse you more, we have moved 4 times in the last 37 years of living in this town and never left this street!

Fabulous Old Mirror $88 *

SOLD*This is a big old heavy beveled edge mirror, with pretty rose embellishments around the frame.
It is painted in a creamy white. It has really nice details!
The wire hanger is set so that it hangs horizontally, for over a sofa or buffet, but it would be great hanging vertically as a dressing mirror.
The size is 25" x 45". $88
It will be in the shop next week.
LOL and it's already gone to a new home! SOLD

Aqua magazine rack/book stand $33

Sweet old side table with magazine/book holder.
Soft aqua paint color.
A useful touch of Shabby Country Cottage style.

AQUA!

Ok so I have had this love/hate relationship with the color aqua for home decor and painted furniture. Absolutely love it, I am drawn to almost any piece I see in magazines, in shops and shows. Be it beachy or country, more on the blue hue or closer to a shade of green, I gravitate towards it. New fresh paint or old and chippy, the color catches my eye.

BUT!! That said...for some reason I have never really had that color in my home decor.
Oh yes I did the 80s country blue, and the 90s South West contemporary pastel blue. (and I wear lots of aqua clothing and turqouise jewelry and have those colors in my tattoos).
But since I have been buying/selling and decorating with antiques and old pieces, vintage and painted furniture I just haven't been able to get those aquas to work in my home. (sage was the preferred basic for many years)
Anyway, I finally gave in to it.
I have lots of tweaking to do, still need to get another color, like seafoam, to do some pieces. Try to get a few hues going.

And of course now I will have a mission to search out anything aqua when I go treasure hunting!

Flip Top Storage Bench

Pics of an old dark storage bench painted in a creamy Malted Milk, and sanded just a bit.
Great for winter hats and gloves, and a good spot to sit down on to lace up the boots.
Also would be handy near the door for dog leashes, play toys and balls, and of course doggie clothing.
I think this is another piece that must have a story.
My guess is Mama had a specific spot picked out for this bench. Maybe under a window, in a hall way or mud room. But it appears there may have been some heat register down low on the wall. Which meant Papa had to modify the basic construction. So in his building of this bench he worked out a way to have it flush against the wall without interfering with whatever was there? Must have made Mama happy! Good old Yankee ingenuity. (see interior pic)
